How To Write an Essay

How To Write an Essay

Essay writing is a necessary part of any student's life, although it can cause panic in even the calmest of scholars. By sticking to a few key points you can keep the process simple and effective. If you're unsure about how to write an essay, remembering a few basic steps can help you organize a concise paper on any topic.

1. Decide on a topic. What type of essay are you writing? First, brainstorm as many different ideas about the topic that you can. Write down some points on a piece of paper, or draw a diagram or graph for anything that comes to mind. Choose a persuasive essay topic that will grab the attention of your readers.

2. Choose a thesis. This is the most important part of the essay - the theme of your entire paper. The thesis is at the end of your introduction and states your topic followed by the point you are trying to make in the essay.

3. Start writing a rough draft. Some people prefer to write in order - introduction, three or four body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Others like to write the body first and then add an introduction and conclusion after they have the key points. Either way, each body paragraph should have one main idea and several supporting sentences.

4. Polish the rough draft. Now that you have the basic structure, you can alter things and add the final touches. Make sure that you start with your strongest paragraph, and end with the second strongest. Read the essay once or twice to make sure that it makes sense and flows smoothly from one idea to the next. Check the spelling and fix any grammatical errors.

It's becoming more and more common to see online essays for sale on a number of sites. Some companies will even take a given topic and write a custom paper. Online essays are available on many websites in searchable format - you can find anything and everything with the click of a mouse. But be warned - it's just as easy to check for plagiarizing through software, and the consequences can be serious. Most teachers can recognize the difference between your writing style and that of a professional essay writer. If you do use an online essay for information, you must be sure to include it as a source at the end of your paper. You're better off to do the work yourself - it's almost guaranteed you'll need the practice writing essays at some point in the future.
