Pitfalls of Dormitory Life While Earning Better Grades.

Dorm life is one of the most challenging moves students face at college. College students often do not know who their roommates may be or even what dorm life is. Often the rooms are paper-thin and a person can hear anything through the next room and even some of the other rooms of the dormitory. Some of the pitfalls of living in a dorm are noise, late hours, social pressures, academic pressures, drugs, alcohol, and constant interruptions. Often dormitories are known to have wild parties and fun, fun, fun. Many students face having freedom for the first time and they are not sure what to do with it. Various problems arise when a student lives in a dormitory including making good grades or partying too much and failing their first year of college.
One of the pitfalls of living in a dorm is sharing a computer. Often there are only two or three computers in a dormitory that means going to the library to get assignments done. Often libraries limit a student to being on the computer for an hour. Planning is essential in getting assignments finished.

One of the pitfalls of living in a dormitory is the unknown of who the roommate will be. Some people are organized while they have roommates who are not. Some roommates are very talkative while others are shy. Some roommates have strong ethics while others do not. It is essential for students to make adjustments as well as learning to compromise with roommates. Sometimes your roommate may have to study while you decide to sleep or vice versa.

Try to make friends with the students in the dorm. However, the problem that arises is that many students decide to party even on weeknights. Although there may be rules about alcohol and drugs they are not always obeyed. If your roommate has drugs you may decide to ask for a different roommate or to tell the resident leader.

Noise is usually to the extreme in a dorm. This certainly makes it difficult to study. What makes it difficult is many of the students in dorm are just now getting their freedom from their parents and freedom is important to them. Parents are not there to tell them to go to bed or to study. For the first time they do not have anyone to guide or lead them in their decisions. This freedom often leads to unwise choices for some students. Most dormitories have a set time to be “quiet” for the rest of the night. This is a great time to study.

Making friends with others in the dorm can lead to forming study groups. These are often beneficial in passing tests. Each student could ask questions and let others answer. Different members of the group often ask questions that others might not have. Making passing grades in college requires a lot of studying and study groups are a great way to do this.

While noise may be excessive in your room or throughout the resident hall, it is important to find a quiet place to study. This can be difficult because often students will interrupt as they come to your room to visit. The library is a great place to study that requires the students to keep the noise down. Going to a park is a quiet place and offers a difference in the surroundings.

Studying is the key to making better grades. This can be done in a group or alone. The key is spending at least three hours of study for each class.
