Starting a sentence with the word “because”.

-- 2014-11-30
I always learned throughout elementary school that starting a sentence with the word “because” is a big no-no. But I see this all the time these days when I’m reading. Is it wrong or not?

The word “because” is a subordinating conjunction and it is possible that it can be used to begin a sentence, provided that you actually execute the subordination through establishing that subordination with an independent clause. For example, “Because I don’t know your professor, I don’t know why she would give you this correction” would serve as a proper sentence, because the subordinate clause connects to an independent clause. Yet “Because she hates me” would not serve as a sentence, since the subordinate clause does not have an independent clause. Because many professors believe that the use of “because” to start a sentence is improper, you may wish to avoid using it.
