Chinese-born immigrants flocked to new opportunities in the United States during the second half of the nineteenth century, but a buildup of gradual racial and economic tensions caused the number of Chinese residents in America to decrease drastically. By 1920 U.S Chinese population dropped to nearly half what it had been in 1890.
