This paper briefly examines the ideological differences between the spirit that characterized expansion in the original North American colonies, and what was to come in the 1800s in the form of Manifest Destiny. The argument is based on the assumption that with the national identity created by the Revolutionary War, it would have been impossible for the colonies to formulate anything as ideologically articulate as Manifest Destiny.
