Like many other environmental issues, the success and failure of initiatives to mediate global warming is precipitously tied to corporate economics. In 1997, more than 150 nations signed the Kyoto Protocol. Although it lacked specifics on how countries would implement emission-reducing efforts, it was at least the first step towards building a global consensus on managing this issue. Three years later, George W. Bush completely pulled the U.S. out of the agreement.
