Much of the impetus for the immigration from other parts of the country to California and other Western states came from gold and silver strikes at places like Colorado’s Pike’s Peak strike in Colorado, the “Last Chance Gulch” in Montana, and the Forty-niner Gold Rush in California. This paper examines the continuing effect on the West and especially on California of its historied past as a place built on the promise of quick riches and other glamorous dreams.
