This is the effect of sounds persisting for some time after the arrival of the direct sound wave as a result of the strength of multiple reflections of the sound off the walls and other surfaces in a room. To put it simply, the longer a sound is bounced around in a room, the longer is its reverberation time (Hall, p.432).
