This paper briefly compares and contrasts two pieces of artwork in respect to their relation to their audiences at the time of their creation. The two pieces of artwork are the Greek “Statue of a Kouros” and the “Human- headed Winged Bull and Winged Lion” from Mesopotamia. As both date from approximately the same time period (590 and 880 BCE, respectively), these artworks are thus exceptional means of comparing the significance of art on different societies.
