Modernization in China and Japan: Contrasting Reformation Periods.
After initial contact with the West, the countries of China and Japan both experienced difficulties in terms of establishing progressive and effective relationships with representatives of European government. Both China and Japan entered eras of transition in which acculturation - or the protest thereof - characterized the political, social, and economic policies found therein. In China, this era is referred to as the Qing Dynasty, while in Japan it is called the Meiji Restoration. This paper addresses the reforms made during these periods.
