This paper presents a comprehensive overview of gender relations and the status of women in the People's Republic of China (PRC) at the end of the twentieth century. Initially, the historical influence of Confucianism and Communism in the context of gender and domestic relations is explored. The contemporary situation is assessed in terms of private life-marriage, divorce, domestic labour and fertility for example--and public life-i.e. the workforce and politics. Finally, the impact of reforms since 1978 is summarized and future trends are considered. 35 pgs. Bibliography lists 37 sources.
