Book Review: "Conduct Unbecoming: Gays And Lesbians In The U.S. Military" by Randy Shilts.
This book is based upon a large number of interviews with gays and lesbians, and others, involved with gay and lesbians in the military, in the United States. There were over 1,000 interviews in all. This gives the book the feel of something that is significant in terms of historical fact, and of course, it purports to be factual. This book talks at some length about the nature of discrimination in he US military. Shilts lists the methods that were used by military powers that be, to locate and expel gays from the military. These "witch hunts" often resulted in the ruination of lives and careers for many men and women" particularly in earlier times when tolerance was virtually unheard of. 5 pgs. 1 f/c. 1b.
