This paper examines the role of conflict and authority structures in August Wilson's famous play Fences. Specifically, the paper discusses the relationship between Troy Maxson and his son Cory. Much of their relationship in the play is centered on their differing ideas for Cory's future. In the end, we see that Cory both resisted and accepted his father's authority, but attempted to find his own power in the world.
