In Love Medicine, Louise Erdrich uses cars as a metaphor to the materialism and values of the modern world, which she sees as the road to native self-destruction. In her novel, we clearly see how some natives finally allow themselves to be absorbed into white culture. For Erdrich, this cultural development is native suicide.
