It is difficult for anyone just entering the accounting profession today to imagine a world in which the actual work of accounting was done by hand – perhaps with the benefit of an adding machine or – gasp! – a calculator. The profession today offers a range of software tools that are almost unbelievably powerful in the capacities to do a range of work quickly and powerfully. This paper examines one of those, Software's Macola Progression Series of accounting software, one of its overall lines of “business management solutions” The accounting software offered by the firm is designed to be used by small to midsize businesses – although given the cost of the software as well as its capacity it seems more designed for the mid-range rather than the small business.
