This narrative tells an American woman's story of opening and running a food bank to solve her personal hunger problem. It shows creativity and personal strength. The food service she opened was in Vancouver, Washington. In 1997, the United States Department of Agriculture stated that there was no hunger in America. I knew that this statement was false. Why, because I was hungry. With no job, a recent long-term illness, and a failing marriage to a man who refused to contribute to his family, I often saw the refrigerator empty. My health did not allow me to gain full?time employment, but I knew I had to do something about my plight. I solved my problem by starting a food pantry to feed my family and other families with similar problems. However, even though my food pantry would become a model for feeding the hungry, I would experience nothing but resistance to my efforts.
