This paper discusses how toxic popular culture can be. School shootings in Littleton, Colorado and San Diego are only the most recent reminders that something is deeply amiss in our media age. Violence and explicit sexual content in television, films, music, and video games have escalated sharply in recent years. Children of all ages are now being exposed to a barrage of images and words that threaten not only to rob them of normal childhood innocence, but also to distort their view of reality and even undermine their character growth. . So the question becomes, isn't Hollywood merely providing a product for which there is great public demand? Isn't the consumer at least partly to blame for the problem? Lest anyone forget that Hollywood is, after all, a business community based on dollars and cents, and like any business caters its product to public demand.
