Timeless Qualities in Literature: Appealing to Basic Human Nature Rather than Entertainment.
This paper uses a quote by Samuel Johnson ("Nothing can please many, and please long, but just representations of general nature") as the foundation of an argument concerning the "timeless" qualities in various works of literature. Two stories are examined in order to better address this quote, and these stories are "The Death of Ivan Ilych" by Leo Tolstoy and "The Tell- Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe. 5 pgs.
