This paper considers how resarch in education leads to or tests theories which are then adapted in practice in the classroom, using as an exmaple the issue of mainstreaming, which has been much studied and which has been implemented through policies adopted bcause of such research, then tested further to see if the program is working, then modified to accommodate new research.
