This paper discusses children and disabilities. According to the U.S. Department of Education's Seventeenth Annual Report to Congress (1995), more than 2.4 million children with learning disabilities (LD) received special education services in our nation's schools during the 1993-94 school year. For educators, understanding the special learning needs of a student with a learning disability plays a critical part in designing an appropriate educational program for that student and in providing needed educational and behavioral support. Information on the many instructional practices and accommodations that have proven effective with students with LD can also help educators maximize these students' possibilities of academic, social, and behavioral success.
