This essay is a book review of E.P Thompson's "The Making of the English Working Class." This essay argues that, in Thompson's opinion, the milieu of pre-industrial England contributed significantly to shaping the attitudes and preconceptions of the working classes of Britain towards the social effects of the new capitalist economy. Their response to economic changes thus suggests their awareness that this new economy posed a threat to the comparative stability of the older social and economic order. 5 pgs. 1 source.
