This paper will examine the narrative structure of Citizen Kane in order to demonstrate something of the work's multifaceted complexity. It will be argued that, although a chronological reading of the film may suggest that the narration proceeds, with diversions, to an eventual discovery of the "rosebud" at film's end, this may also be seen as another blind narrative alley in a film which denies a full perspective of the character at its heart. 6.5 pgs. 6 f/c. 5b.
