In today's interdependent global economy, the destiny and prospect of an industry in one country or region is often tangled with industries in another country or region. Development in the West, for instance, has reduced the need for primary products in the production processes. This results in the decline of traditional industries such as automobile plantations in many Southeast Asian countries. Many of these Southeast Asian countries have hence learnt to conform to this process of global shift in production processes. Their main interest is to remain competitive in the global economy and, yet, to seize value-added activities largely through the local presence of foreign investments.
