Critical Assessment of "Where the Red Fern Grows".
This paper analyzes the classic children's novel Where the Red Fern Grows using mythology and Jungian symbolic analysis, part of a recognized school of literary criticism. An instance of the hero/warrior/hunter myth, the novel also uses first-person narrative to great effect, creating a believably naïve narrator with whom we can identify in his moments of greatest joy, and greatest pain. The essay mentions the World Trade Center tragedy in the introduction to give some sense of relevance to the themes of death and loss that surface in the book. 6 pgs. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
