This paper discusses the film, In a Time of Violence written by Oliver Schmitz and directed by Brian Tilley, is a fictional work set in various parts of South Africa, primarily Soweto and Johannesburg, during the final months of South African apartheid in 1994. It is a story about a people who were in the difficult process of undergoing drastic cultural change. It is a period marked by conflict and violent cultural and political clashes. This time period, leading up to South Africa's first free election, was a time when tensions were running extremely high, not only between black South Africans and white Afrikaners, but also inter-racially, as opposing political parties jockeyed for campaign position. The film is presented in a three part series and was first broadcast in South Africa in July of 1994, a time when the feelings and emotions surrounding the issue were still very fresh.
