This quote explains the men that played a role in Kate Choplin’s story, “The Awakening.” Mr. Pontellier is a serious man focusing on society, while Robert is a playboy focusing on rich women, and other men in the story are dedicated to the women in their lives. The main character is The Awakening is Edna Pontellier. Her husband is Mr. Pontellier, a serious individual devoted to his family, wife, children, and his role in the “upper crust” of society. Life to him was his possessions whether it was his wife or children. “You are burnt beyond recognition,’ he added, looking at his wife as one looks at a valuable piece of personal property which has suffered some damage” (Chopin i2).
