Transition in Russia and China: Comparisons and Contrasts
This four-page undergraduate paper examines reform and transition in Russia and China. The author notes that Chinese reforms since 1989 have been different from the much vaster reforms underway in Russia since 1991 because the communist hierarchy preserved communist rule in China and maintains a significant degree of control over the economy. It is encouraging that the general trends in China and Russia are towards full market economies and ever-greater participation in the world economy, but full integration will take time because of the harsh legacy of totalitarianism.
