This paper explores the condition of "dual diagnosed disorders". This term refers to the emergence of a psychological illness (e.g.: depression) at the same time as a substance or alcohol abuse issue. This is a remarkably common psychological state but is difficult to treat. Two methods of treatment, those of the 12-step programs and cognitive behavioural therapy, are discussed.
