This paper critically assess the principles found in the Age of Enlightenment and in other forms of philosophy and social reason that arose within Europe during the 17th and the 18th Centuries. Types of thought that manifested during this period were socialism, utilitarianism, and other modes of thinking that relied on a study of human behavior, social anthropology, and natural laws. This paper places an emphasis on the belief manifest during the European Enlightenment that the "individual" was not truly unique and therefore was a comparatively insignificant aspect of society. 8 pgs.
