15881 Modernization
in China and Japan: Contrasting Reformation Periods.
After initial contact with the West, the countries of China
and Japan both experienced difficulties in terms of establishing
progressive and effective relationships with representatives
of European government. Both China and Japan entered eras of
transition in which acculturation - or the protest thereof -
characterized the political, social, and economic policies found
therein. In China, this era is referred to as the Qing Dynasty,
while in Japan it is called the Meiji Restoration. This paper
addresses the reforms made during these periods.

303 Child Soldiers-A
Global Problem.
This paper attempts to analyze the use of child soldiers in
Southeast Asia, the how, the why, and the attempts by the UN
to stop child violence and the use of child soldiers throughout
the world. The militarization of the childhood of Asia's youth
is, of course, a reflection of the militarization of society
as a whole; this for Asia, as well as other countries as we
will see is not the exception, but rather the rule.

16435 Mo Yan,
Writing the life he has lived
Mo Yan's popular yet brutally honest depiction of the life of
his paternal grandparents is examined here, along with his life
and motivations for writing as he does. Red Sorghum is a tale
told in five parts based on semi-autobiographical, and sureal
experiences, showing a strong use of symbolism combined with
absolute realism of the life of a Chinese peasant in the 1920's
and 30's.

16966 Yuri
Kochiyama
Yuri Kochiyama is an amazing woman who has lived through times
in concentration camps during the war, was holding Malcolm X
in her arms when he was shot, and has become a figurehead for
activism everywhere. While this paper examines whether or not
her participation in the Civil Rights movement and the black
rights movements in the 60's qualifies her as an 'Asian Activist'
it is this authors opinion that yes it does - and Asians everywhere
should be proud of what she has done.

20381 Growing
Up Asian in American Society
Asian Americans comprise almost 4% of the U.S. population as
Asian immigration has increased 6 fold in the last 40 years
(Chi and Park, 1999, p. VII). However, Asian Americans suffer
from many of the trappings of American society just like any
other teenager might. The gang wars affect most everyone whether
one is a member of a gang or not. In addition, the worries of
going to college consume the minds of many of today’s teenagers
as well it should. However, there are areas where the Asian
American population tends to fall into danger more frequently
than do the white youth of this country. On-the-other-hand,
there are pitfalls that many Asian Americans avoid because of
the nature of their heritage. All in all, growing up Asian in
an American society seems to fit the old saying- the same only
different.
