1712 Louise
Erdrich's Use of Cars as a Metaphor.
In Love Medicine, Louise Erdrich uses cars as a metaphor to
the materialism and values of the modern world, which she sees
as the road to native self-destruction. In her novel, we clearly
see how some natives finally allow themselves to be absorbed
into white culture. For Erdrich, this cultural development is
native suicide. One of her main metaphors, therefore, is how
white society assimilates natives through the vehicle of the
car. 5 pgs. 2 f/c. 1b.

1764 Book Review:
McTeague.
Sexuality is not a central theme in Frank Norris's novel McTeague.
So although sexuality does have a role to play in McTeague,
it is a comparatively minor one. The most important part for
sexuality and the way Norris portrays it is as a sort of signpost
or illumination to the grander passions of avarice and revenge
that drives the central narrative. 4.5 pgs. 10 f/c. 1b.

1784 James
Baldwin - Expressing Words for the Voiceless.
This paper discusses the novel by James Baldwin Go Tell it on
the Mountain. This novel was an important work because it expressed
the voice of those who could not express themselves within the
American Black community in the 1950s. The novel contributed
to the social consciousness of the nation, as it raised certain
sensitive issues regarding the Black experience in white America.
In many respects, this is why the novel can be seen as an important
piece of work, in the sense that it contributed to the education
of the society, expressed the feelings of those who could not
express their own feelings, and raised the consciousness of
those who felt alienated and marginalized. 6 pgs. 2 f/c. 3b.
