Isolation in literature is necessary for the development of
the hero, of the protagonist, and of societies depicted. Isolation
gives the characters the excuse they need to focus on themselves
in a very intense manner. This paper examines the use of literary
isolation in terms of character identity and political transformation
in "Animal Farm", by George Orwell, and "The English Patient",
by Michael Ondaatje. 6 pgs, bibliography lists 2 sources.

5033 Culture,
Genre and the Construction of Love in "Waiting for Godot",
"The Rez Sisters", and "Things Fall Apart".
This essay will argue that there are different kinds of love
endorsed and criticized in each text. In general these may be
grouped into two categories: (1) love for one's fellow human
being; and (2) love for something transcendent of the individual,
whether it be a community/culture or a deity. As will be seen,
the generic conventions of drama limit the expression of meaning
to characters' words and actions. However, both Beckett and
Highway stretch the boundaries of convention in their dramas
which, by flouting the conventional realism of the dramatic
genre, permit the exploration of complex representations of
love. In contrast, it may be argued that Achebe remains more
within the conventions of his genre than Beckett and Highway
in theirs. This is not a weakness, however, in that the novel
form allows Achebe to represent human character and motivation
- in terms of the manifestation of love - on levels that the
dramatic genre cannot. 13 pgs. bibliography lists 3 sources.

5064 The Characters
of Okonkwo and Tata Ndu: A Comparison of Success in Preserving
Traditions.
This paper compares and contrasts the character of Okonkwo from
Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" with the character
of Tata Ndu from Barbara Kingsolver's "The Poisonwood Bible".
The thrust of this comparison is that Tata Ndu is more successful
at keeping foreign invaders from his community than Okonkwo,
and therefore works to preserve the traditions of his world
in a more successful manner. 5 pgs. No bibliography provided.

5098 "Dr.
Faustus" and "Paradise Lost": Conflicts of Free
Will and Faith.
In this essay, Milton's Paradise Lost and Marlowe's Doctor Faustus
are compared as critical texts that address the dominant religious
orthodoxy of their respective histories. The conflict of free
will and Christian faith are set into different sites of contradiction;
however, Marlowe and Milton both present the question of individuality
directly against the assumption of absolute faith in God. In
this paper, the two documents are analyzed to read for the ways
sympathies for individuality are expressed, and the ways God's
judgments are scrutinized in terms of justice and humanity.
