Tom Leykis and Freedom of Speech

When it comes to Tom Leykis people either love him or hate him. Often people are not sure of how to take the comments that Leykis makes. He is completely different from most talk show hosts. He works alone on his four-hour show while he interacts with callers. Leykis has been called a “shock jock.” While many people take what he says as real, others firmly believe he is a natural humanist.

“The Tom Leykis Show” has been syndicated from Los Angeles since 1994. One of the first attention-getters was the “Flash Friday” that led female fans to “show” their appreciation of his talk show in ways that were inappropriate. While it began as a small homage to Jean Shepherd it soon blew up out of proportion. Another product of Leykis is his “Leykis 101” that lists ways for a man to get laid.

Tom Leykis has a natural talent when it comes to talk shows. He started his career at age fourteen when he entered and won a contest that was sponsored by a Long Island radio station. He wrote about why he wanted to be on the radio and was a success. This led to his getting a part on the radio station. Soon his career took off. In 1981 he moved to a station in Albany, New York. After this he went to Phoenix, Los Angeles, Boston, and back to Los Angeles.

His show is one of the few relationship talk shows primarily geared toward males. His viewpoints are geared to making a man happy. He strongly advocates safe sex with his 101 ways to get laid or not to date at all. Leykis is not afraid to be controversial and often he says what he thinks about different subjects. He is a great debater who loves to argue with people about different topics. His Leykis 101 curriculum teaches men about women. He suggests that a man should never spend more than $40 on a date. If he has not gone to bed with a woman by the third date then he should drop dating her. What about true love? How about some fun that costs more than $40 such as going to a concert?

One of the most controversial issues of Leykis has been the issue of rape. He believes the victim’s name should be put in the paper as well as the criminal. Most rape victims do not want their names in the paper. Leykis believes putting the victim’s name in the paper would reduce the number of women who blame men for rape. Many women are outraged by his beliefs about telling the victims name in newspapers or on news reports. They call him a “shock jock.” Many believe his reactions to rape victims are not in taste and unethical.

Many of Leykis followers and fans love him. This love has established MOJO Radio on the Vancouver market. However, he has been kicked out of Canada due to his controversial issues. Many Canadians did not agree with Leykis as a talk show host. They believe his shows should have been edited before broadcasting them in Vancouver. Leykis has offended many Canadians and action was taken against him to remove his shows out of Canada.

Many people believe that Leykis uses “sexual stereotyping” on his talk shows. Many people do not like the way he whines and complains about men. Many women do not like the way he talks about them. Others feel that he should be allowed to say anything he wants because of freedom of speech. While free speech is a part of the United States Constitution, how far should Leykis be allowed to go? An American talk host kicked out of Canada should make Americans think about Leykis as a talk host. The question is should he be limited in what he has to say on the radio?
Many listeners believe that he discusses important topics that others are often afraid to discuss. He is not afraid to talk about dating, relationships, and politics. He often takes the male side of the issues. He has unique philosophies with different viewpoints than a lot of people. Tom Leykis is an unusual man who has a gift of making people think about controversial issues.
