3 Ways to Structure an Argument

argumentive essay topics

There are three models in which you can structure information in your essay. You can choose either one of these prototypes below or combine for a persuasive essay type paper:

Classical

This model presents the main argument and states your opinion convincing your reader why they should support your idea. The classical structure is a popular strategy of making an argument because it has a simple line of thinking to follow. It outlines facts clearly and concisely.

You start with the introduction, a thesis statement, write the arguments, and conclude. It's a useful model when dealing with an audience that doesn't have a strong opinion about the subject of your discussion.

Rogerian

The Rogerian model, you present the problem then clearly show that you understand the strengths and weaknesses of both sides of the argument.

The model allows you to give the reader recommendations after analyzing the evidence and why your point is the most beneficial and enables you to present a middle ground.

Toulmin

The Toulmin model of presenting an essay allows you to choose a side but introduce arguments for and against and find common ground. Here, you submit your claim, evidence to back up your claim and justify the grounds linked to the idea.

The model is an excellent choice if you want to polarize a topic rather than take a stand on one side. It allows you to present facts in a way that makes the claims challenging to argue.

Choosing a Good Argumentative Essay Topic

When picking a topic for an argumentative essay, it must be something you have an interest in so that you can have a better chance of convincing your reader. However, not everything is debatable; therefore, you must pick a good argument essay topic.

Additionally, when choosing a topic, avoid a piece of evidence that is hard to debate and don't take a subject with a broad focus. When you present a theme that is too wide for discussion, the topic may become vague and bring confusion to the audience.

Also, avoid emotionally charged topics and contentious issues, which can be difficult to argue as they evoke emotions. However, you can take a risk and pick a controversial topic that others might decide to avoid.

For instance, topics like evolution, privacy rights, cannabis, abortion, marriage rights, among others, can be an excellent choice. Ensure that you have strong arguments for and against when you pick such topics.

What makes a good topic for your argumentative essay? When choosing a subject, you should keep one thing in mind; it must be debatable.

An Outline of a Good Argumentative Essay

An argumentative essay topic should be more than an opinion to make your voice heard. However, even with a firm stance, it won't be compelling if it's not appropriately structured and reinforced with concrete evidence.

To write a winning argumentative essay, please do the following:

  • Pick a debatable topic.
  • Come up with a clear thesis.
  • Do the research and find evidence.
  • Outline the plan for your essay
  • Shape your arguments and list the points you will use as evidence for and also gather evidence against
  • Write a draft with at least two paragraphs for and countering your topic.
  • Include the evidence with examples
  • Write a compelling conclusion.
  • Proofread and edit your essay

Conclusion

An argumentative essay is an essay type that sharpens critical thinking skills, reading, writing, and analyzing skills.

When you understand an argumentative essay's nature, you can discuss an issue and prove your point of view. Choose your topic well since your final grade depends on a good argumentative essay.
