Writing a Literature Review for a Dissertation

-- 2014-10-27
If I’m writing a literature review for a dissertation, would you recommend a chronological or thematic approach? What types of topics work best for either?

When doing a literature review for a dissertation, a thematic approach is probably better because you can discover, after arranging books chronologically, that they really do not link together because they focus on different subject areas or emphasize specific concepts or case studies or phenomena. When a dissertation review is done using a thematic approach, it allows the reviewer to see the main points and areas of emphasis that make some books more comfortable being grouped together than others. My suggestion is to group books thematically, first, and then to arrange the books you have arranged into specific groups chronologically. This way, you can still have the neatness of the chronological approach, but the books will flow together (there will be continuity in your literature review) because they have already been grouped together according to their main theme(s).

This is my suggestion.
