Literature Essays

The purpose of literature essays can be defined as an essay about different literary works such as for an English literature class. The essay should provide a synopsis of the literature piece. The first step is analyzing the literature work such as examining and analyzing the work of Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet. Create a thesis statement about the literature work. The first paragraph will be the introduction that will give an idea to the reader about where the essay will be going. Select three to six specific points of the literature that will be evidence to prove the thesis. Give quotes to back up the three to six points you have selected. Either use paraphrase or direct quotes from the literature. Conclude with a summary of the essay and show how it gave evidence to the thesis statement.

"But, you may ask, we asked you to speak about women and fiction – what has that got to do with a room of one's own" (Woolf 3). A Room of One's Own written by Virginia Woolf is actually an informal essay about women and fiction. Having a room of one's own is essential to fiction writing and creating a nugget of information the reader can take away. Woolf discusses why a room of one's own for a female writer is vital to achieving quality fiction. First, a writer wants to leave the reader with at least one statement they will remember about the book. Woolf states if she could only give one nugget of information to women it would be having a room of your own is vital to writing fiction. "All I could do was to offer you an opinion upon one minor point – a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction" (Woolf 4). Every good piece of fiction has some truth in it. "Lies will flow from my lips, but there may perhaps be some truth mixed with them; it is to you to seek out this truth and to decide whether any part of it is worth keeping" (Woolf 4). Third, most fiction writers make life more interesting than it actually may be and the only way to create this fiction is having a space and quiet to do it in. "It is a curious fact that novelists have a way of making us believe that luncheon parties are invariable memorable for something very witty that was said, or for something very wise that was done" (Woolf 10). Women and men writers know it is essential to have a room or at least a space to write or otherwise it is impossible to write fiction or non-fiction writing while leaving the reader with a nugget of information. This is a sample paragraph of a literature essay discussing chapter one of "A Room of One's Own" written by Virginia Woolf. The third point is fiction writers make life interesting to the reader and they can only do this with privacy. The conclusion repeats the thesis statement of the importance of fiction and non-fiction writers to have a room of their own.
